Freeling claim Country Living Homes T20 crown
The Freeling Cricket Club yesterday claimed the Country Living Homes Twenty20 Champions Cup after defeating Hope Valley CC by three wickets at Adelaide Oval.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, Freeling posted a competitive 112 from 19 overs in the state final. Sam Carmichael made a disastrous start, the opener run out without scoring. Robert Montgomery (24) and Ian McMillan (20) were impressive in the middle order but it was late hitting to Lachlan Heinrich (30) that saw the total reach 112. Aidan Wilkins (2/27), Paul Eckermann (2/18) and Brett Madigan (2/25) were best with the ball.
Requiring 113 to win, Hope Valley lost openers Jason McNally (10) and Wilkins (1) cheaply. Jarrad Sykes (21) and Greg Jerme (29) built a handy partnership to have their side on track until both batsmen were bowled by Robert Montgomery (2/11). Montgomery’s four overs restricted the runs while Ben Parish chipped in with 2/19 from his three overs. The lower order tried hard but could not muster the required runs, their overs running out with the score 7/110.
Hope Valley was first to qualify for the state final after downing Rose & Crown in the metropolitan side of the draw. In a low scoring affair, Rose & Crown posted 8/87 from their 20 overs thanks largely to 24 not out to Matthew Feltus. Hope Valley batsman Jason McNally was brilliant, his 53 not out combined with 16 to Mike Watson helping their side cruise to victory without losing a wicket.
Freeling took on the Millicent Footballers CC in the country final and proved too good for the team from the south east. Batting first, Millicent made a steady start before opener Jason Barnes (9) was dismissed by Ben Parish (2/14). Bronte Grosser (26) looked to hold things together for his side; however a steady flow of wickets restricted the total to just 84. Freeling made light work of the total, Parish (27) and Raed Hannun (37*) guiding the Hills team home in the 9th over.
