Wattle Range Council Ordinary Meeting on the 11 February 2014 moved that Council authorise Council officers to undertake Community Consultation in regard to the establishment of off‐leash and dog free areas detailed in this report”.
The move to set aside areas for dog owners to allow their dog off leash in a controlled environment will benefit dogs and owners alike, it was decided.
Dogs will benefit from the physical and mental activity of being off leash, as well as opportunities socialise with other dogs in a safe environment.
Dog owners will also benefit positively from social interactions, wellbeing and mental health, provided through visits to the dog parks.
Councils current Animal Management Plan 2012‐2017, identifies the need to Increase public safety and enhance the amenity and environment and provide for the needs of pets, pet owners and non‐pet owners.
Council recognises the community benefits of providing safe off leash areas that contribute to people’s quality of life. A trip to the dog park should be seen as an affordable recreation option for the public as well as a place of rest and recreation for travellers and their dogs who embark on a pet friendly holiday.
Further information on Councils proposal to establishment off‐leash and dog free areas can be found on Councils website http://www.wattlerange.sa.gov.au/animalmanagement
