Dear Editor,

Yesterday the Australian Bureau of Statistics released updated information on the state of the economy. It was encouraging news:

* Real gross domestic product increased by 1.1 per cent in the March quarter;

* Australia’s export volumes increased by the highest percentage since September 2000;

* Our current account deficit as a share of GDP was the smallest since March 1980;

* Productivity growth is solidly positive; and

* Construction of homes is picking up – which is good news for tradies and small businesses.

The national accounts showed that the economy is resilient and that Australia has a solid foundation for growth. It demonstrates that the Government’s Economic Action Strategy for a strong, prosperous economy is working. This result is on the back of 106,000 new jobs being created in the economy over the first four months of this year including 79,000 full-time jobs. These are good figures and strong foundations. These foundations will be further strengthened by the decisions we made in the Budget to tackle Labor’s debt and deficits.

Regards,
