FORMER SANFL star Gavin Colville will be in Mount Gambier on Sunday 19 October 2014, to pay tribute to those who have been recognised for their dedication and commitment to sport throughout the Limestone Coast in 2014, at City Hall, Mount Gambier. An impressive nine finalists are from Wattle Range.
High achievers, club volunteers, coaches and event organisers have been invited to the 2014 SportSE Sports Star Awards, to be held at Mount Gambier’s City Hall on Sunday to celebrate their involvement in sport, while also acknowledging those who give so much of their time and effort during the year.
Colville, who played over 200 SANFL games and was a past club captain of the Woodville-West Torrens Eagles, will attend the event as guest speaker, while Mount Gambier surgeon and sports enthusiast Barney McCusker is taking to the stage as compere.
Awards coordinator and South East Local Government Association Star Club Field Officer Josephine Duigan said the event is a chance for nominees to come together, talk about their experiences and meet people and fellow award winners from different clubs and events.
“Categories for the sports awards include Primary and Secondary School Athlete, Athlete with a Disability, Male and Female Athlete and the community awards section includes coach, club, volunteer and event.
“This year’s nominees include volunteers and athletes who have reached national and international level, which is a fantastic achievement for athletes in country regions,” Ms Duigan said.
“Four local nominees have also been selected in the Sport SA and Advertiser Channel 7 Sports Star Awards, such is the quality of our local sports people.
“Their names will be announced on Sunday at our local awards.
A tribute to will also be made to one of South Australian motor sport’s most dedicated officials, Lionel Stingers.

VOLUNTEER – Justine Brown – Millicent Football Netball Club.
During her 28 years at the club Justine has been on the Netball, Ladies and Social committees. In 2001 along with husband Neil, Justine was awarded Club Person of the Year. Justine is currently the Netball Records Officer, a position she has held for many years. She coached the B Grade team in 2007, was a playing coach in 2008 and 2009 and in 2010 she was a playing co-coach. She has also umpired for several years – for the club and for the WBNL. She earned her C Grade umpires badge in 2013. In 1998 Justine was awarded Player Life Membership when she played her 200th senior game. In July 2010 she became the first netballer in the League to play 400 games. She played her last game in the Grand Final against West Gambier in 2012. She has played 433 games for the MFNC from 1986 – 2012

2014 – Invited to try out for the State U18 female Football team at just 15 years of age.
2014 – Selected in the State U16 female Football team for the second year in a row competed in Sydney recently.
2014 – Represented Penola High School in a 9-a-side and was a part of the South East female Football team.
2013 – Made the State U16 female football team and played in the National Championships in Darwin. Kelsey kicked two goals for the carnival
2013 – Part of the Inaugural South East Female football team, who played against Eyre Peninsula in a match at AAMI stadium. Kelsey kicked the final goal of the game to save her team from defeat and bring the game to a draw.
2013 – Represented Penola High School in the Tatiara 9-a-side football competition and booted 26 goals for the day.
2013 – Ran water for the local A grade Penola Eagles football team.
2012 – Played last season for Penola Eagles (ineligible by age after 2012).
2012 – Kicked 10 goals in the final game of the season.
As a youngster, kicked the footy with her dad, was an Auskick participant and played for the Penola Eagles as a junior. Kelsey hopes to make the state team for the next 2 years until she is ineligible by age. Her dream is for a women’s comp to be introduced to the AFL and to play professionally. Current Age: 15
Kye Todd – Taekwondo
Has been selected to represent Australia three times at an international level.
2014 Member Australian Team for the World Titles in Italy
2012 Member Australian Team World Titles in Canada.
2010 Korean World Titles Seoul- Silver.
He is currently training for the World Titles in England in 2016.
This person has a passion for Taekwondo and believes its philosophy and teachings will make him a better person.
His role is to encourage others to be the best they can be and proud of their achievements.
Taekwondo is his way of life.
CLUB – Millicent and District International Basketball Association
In 2014 the Junior Girl’s teams in ages U12, U14, U16 and U 18 represented at all tournaments
At the Australian Country Cup in Albury 13 Millicent Association players were selected in the state country team
In 2013 at the State Country Championships, 4 Millicent teams finished in the top four – this is a significant achievement for a small country town. Millicent’s junior program was also rated 3 after Victor Harbour and Mount Gambier.
Club funds and Government and Council Grants are used to constantly manage facility upgrades. In the past 2-3 years the following upgrades have occurred – a new Solar system – $60 000 which has cut power costs from $10 00 pa to $2000 pa, new roof insulation – $45 000 + council contribution of $20 000, a lighting upgrade – $45 000 + $20 000 grant which saves $300 – $500 per quarter in operating costs. The installation of these upgrades was managed by parent volunteers. The parents committee fundraises through canteen sales and significant funds are also raised at the Millicent Junior Tournament. The money saved is re invested to subsidise costs for junior tournaments and other events which saves families a combined $13 000 per year. COACH – Kye Todd – Taekwondo – Millicent
Kye is 22 years old and has been practising Taekwondo since he was 10. He was an assistant instructor at the Millicent Taekwondo Club for 7 years. Kye is now the Instructor of the Millicent Taekwondo club, having officially taken over in March 2013. In the short time he has been the instructor he mentored one student who recently competed at a National level for the first time after three months in the club and returned home with gold.
Kye is passionate about Taekwondo and lives the values that Taekwondo teaches. He is described as humble and willing to help any student achieve their goals. Kye recently had the opportunity to go to teach students in South Africa and the experience he gained by helping others and seeing how lucky we are in Australia has made him want to return and to help those less fortunate and share his knowledge.
Thomas Winkley – Centrals Baseball club
2014 Member of the SAPSASA Mid SE softball team and state champions.
2014 Selected in the Mount Gambier Little League team.
2013/14 U13 winning grand final team and hit a grand slam.
2013 Member SAPSASA boys silver medal softball team.
Member Winning Millicent Grand final softball team which included a double play on the last play to win grand final.
In Tom’s second year of baseball he won batting average for the league as well as the club. In his first year he won best and fairest for his team, Thomas has only been playing baseball for 4 years.
Future Plans: Would like to play in div 1 sometime soon. Would love to be a part of the Adelaide Bite team.
