Letter to the Editor
I would like to thank Mr Churches for voicing his opinions about Council issues in the recent article in the SE Times. Mr Churches comments, concerns and ideas should serve as a reminder to Council, Councillors and aspiring Councillors that there are members of the public who have ideas and opinions about the actions or non-actions of Council. I certainly agree with Mr Churches comments about event base tourism, and I am sure there are many other people who have ideas worth listening too.
The current Council strategic plan was developed with a good deal of community consultation using focus groups and attempted to capture the wants, needs and aspirations of the communities within the Council area, but that was back in 2010. The strategic plan was then reviewed internally by Council in 2012. In my view it is time to develop a new strategic plan, a plan developed in consultation with the community using a variety of consultation processes such as, face to face consultation, questionnaires, and ward consultation and social media to connect with our younger residents.
Whilst some may see a formal strategic plan as a bureaucratic document it should be the document that guides Council’s decision making during the term of the Council. To be useful the document needs to represent the views of the ratepayers and prioritise all the goals to be achieved.
It is then the role of Council to determine how to achieve the required outcomes.
