Two Mount Gambier men are lucky to be alive after a metal bar dislodged from a trailer being towed by a truck at Compton on Tuesday.
Police, who attended at the scene and investigated the cause of the incident, are keen to dispel rumours in the community that the bar was part of a load that had not been properly secured.
Officers said it was part of a ladder attached to the rear of the trailer and bounced off the road before smashing through the windscreen of a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction on Cafprico Rd about 8.50am.
No one will be charged in connection with the incident, which police said was a reminder as to why motorists – particularly driving on country roads – should remain vigilant.
The metal bar wedged into the rear cabin of the vehicle just between two men missing them by just centimetres.
