South East girls shine in female AFL

South East girls Sarah and Jess Allen travelled to Australian Youth Girls Championships female’s football in Mandurah WA last weekend with father Keith. It was Sarah’s final year in U18s. She was Captain, the team won the pool B grand final, she was best & fairest for carnival, won match ball for best player in the final & named in All Australian team. Jess has two more years in this age group.

The squad was named in December and they have trained on Sunday mornings at AAMI stadium. The final side of 26 was selected in March. There was also a 3 day camp at West beach during the holidays as part of their preparation.

Sarah and Jess have played in the same side a few times before:-
• In the Under 16s Adelaide 2012 – Megan, Sarah & Jess. Under 16s Darwin 2013 – Sarah & Jess (Sarah – B & F for carnival, selected All Australian)
• Under 16s Sydney 2014 – Jess (Jess – vice captain, selected All Australian) (Sarah attended as a player mentor)
• Under 18s Shepparton 2013 – Megan & Sarah. Under 18s Canberra 2014 – Megan, Sarah & Jess (Sarah – All Australian) Under 18s Mandurah 2015 – Sarah & Jess (Sarah – Captain, B & F for carnival, Best player in GF & selected All Australian)

The Grand Final scores don’t show how close the game really was until 3 quarter time with the final scores were 9-4-58 to NSW/ACT 3-2-20

Sarah and Jess were very happy with their performances. Sarah said it was a great way to finish Youth girls rep footy being captain of the team winning their division after finishing 3rd in 5 previous 16 & 18 championships.
Jess still has two more years in this age group and was very happy to be a part of a championship win.
Father Keith said both daughters have trained most Sundays in Adelaide since December. They have also trained with the Millicent under 18 boys on Tuesday nights and attended morning weights sessions on Tuesday & Thursday mornings at Millicent High School. On top of this they have both had basketball commitments with Millicent & SA Country.
Sarah has been selected in the open women’s state team which travels to Darwin on Friday to play against NT on Saturday at TIO stadium. She also plays in the open women’s comp in Adelaide for Salisbury.
Jess has 2 more years of youth girls & is hoping to start playing in the open women’s comp in Adelaide for Salisbury. Jess will also play 6 games locally in the South East female football comp starting this Sunday run in conjunction with the WBJFL

Sarah was selected for the open women’s team through an All Stars exhibition game at Adelaide oval prior to the Crows v Melbourne game. The team was selected from that game.

Hatherleigh’s Wanda Waring represented SA as the Sports trainer for the week. Wanda also attended the 3 day camp in Adelaide. Keith Allen said, “I approached Wanda back in March to see if she was available to be the Sports trainer for the Youth Girls State team. Wanda attended the 3 day camp at West Beach in Adelaide during the school holidays to get to know the players & then went away with the team last week.

Jess has two more years in this age group.

South East female AFL starts this Sunday at Vansittart Park at 1 pm. The comp is open to all females over 14. Players wishing to nominate should contact southeastfemaleafl@gmail.com

The goal for Female Football AFL is to have a National Competition  by 2017 and a Professional National Competition by 2020.
