SA Country baseballers head to Queensland to compete in the Nationals

From tomorrow (June 1) until Wednesday (June 5) the SA Country baseball team will be competing in the National Baseball Championships held in Tallebudgera, on the Gold Coast, Queensland.

The boys will compete against teams from around the country, playing four games on the first three days, with the last two days scheduled for finals. On the Thursday (June 6) the contingent will take in the rides and amusements at Dreamworld and Whitewater World before returning home on the Friday.

Their match program is as follows:

  • Saturday, 10.30am v West Coast
  • Saturday, 3.00pm v Sunraysia
  • Sunday, 2.45pm v Adelaide South
  • Monday, 10.30am v Perth North

Below is a small bio on each of the players selected to represent SA Country in the national competition.

Thomas Vanderhorst

Thomas Vanderhorst

Thomas has played baseball for three seasons with the Millicent Bandits. Thomas loves catching, pitching and short stop. In Thomas’s most recent season with the Bandits he won the Batting Average and RBI’s. Thomas’s favourite team is the New York Yankees.

Koby Chant

Koby Chant

Koby plays for Centrals Baseball Club. He likes to play first base and also plays outfield. Koby’s favourite teams are Adelaide Bites and LA Angels. His favourite players are Richard Olson and Tori Hunter.

Emerson Marks

Emerson Marks

Emerson plays for Tiger Baseball Club and enjoys pitching and likes first base. His favourite teams are Canberra Cavalry and Philadelphia Philies. Emerson’s favourite players are Joe Atkins and Roy Halliday.

Brock Keding

Brock Keding

Brock plays for Centrals Baseball Club and he likes playing second base. His favourite teams are Adelaide Bites and San Francisco Giants. His favourite players are Stefan Welcha and Buster Posey.

Mathew Porter

Mathew Porter

Mathew has been playing for the Federals Baseball Club in Mt Gambier for the past five years. Matthew’s favourite position is first base, his favourite baseball teams are The Adelaide Bites and the New York Yankees.

Tom Rundle

Tom Rundle

Tom began playing baseball for the Port Adelaide Baseball Club five years ago, He moved to Mt Gambier three years ago and has been playing for the Federal Baseball Club as well as the Kensington Baseball Club in Adelaide. His career highlights so far has been this seasons grand final win with the boys at Federals. His favourite baseball team in the Tampa Bay Rays.

Ethan Chuck

Ethan Chuck

Ethan has been playing baseball for three years for the Central Baseball Club. In the most recent season Ethan won the teams Best and Fairest and Batting average. His favourite positions are pitcher and short stop. His favourite team is the New York Yankees and favourite player is Derek Jeter.

Jack Lockwood

Jack Lockwood

Jack started playing T-ball when he was seven years old for Reidy Park Primary School. He started playing for Central Baseball Club in 2010 at the age of eight. He loves being catcher and having a pitch. Jacks favourite teams are the Adelaide Bite and Boston Red Sox. His favourite players are Stefan Welch and David Ortiz. Jack’s nicknames are JackL (Jackal) and Locky and he loves his dog Pedro.

Liam Vanschaik

Liam Vanschaik

Liam has been playing for the Tigers Baseball Club since the age of eight, in that time he won a premiership. Liam likes 1st base but pitching is his preferred position. His favourite team is the LA Angels. This is his second year at Little League.

Kaleb Bowd

Kaleb Bowd

Kaleb had been playing baseball for the past three years, his first season with the South Indians and then with the Central Baseball Club. In 2011/2012 Caleb was voted Best Team Person. His favourite position is catcher and short stop. Caleb’s favourite team is St Louis Cardinals.

Alex Harkness

Alex Harkness

Alex has been playing for the Tiger’s Baseball Club for the past four seasons. In 2012 he was voted the Under 12’s Most Valuable Player. His favourite position is catcher and his favourite team in the San Francisco Giants.

Matthew Heesemans

Matthew Heesemans

Matthew has played for the Federals Baseball Club for the past four years, he represented Mount Gambier at the 2012 Little League Championships. A supportive team member, Matthew gives 100% in any role the coach gives him. He can be relied upon to contribute consistent performances for his team. Matthew came runner up in the MGDBL U/13’s for batting average. A passionate Collingwood, Manchester United and Adelaide Bite supporter, Matthew loves watching and playing all sports. Being a talented all rounder, Matthew has also represented Mount Gambier is soccer and tennis in the past year.

Branden Telford

Branden Telford

Branden has played for Central Baseball Club for the past two years and absolutely loves the game. His favourite position is pitching and he also loves to bat. His favourite teams are the Adelaide Bite and Boston Red Sox.

Lauchie Tilley

Lauchie has played for the Millicent Bandits Baseball Club for the past five seasons. His favourite position is pitching and his favourite team is the New York Yankees.

The coaching staff is made up of Roger Chuck (Head Coach, Centrals), Darren Keding (Assistant Coach, Centrals), Peter Harkness (Assistant Coach, Tigers) and Chris Rundle (Executive Officer, Federals).
